APRIL 21 DAY 301
We were up VERY early...5:00AM to get ready for departure. Lily had
an early breakfast and walk, and Jim had the engines fired up at 6:30
when we got underway just as we were able to see the channel and buoys.
The tide was just at peak high tide. We reached the bridge just before
before them and before they lifted it. It turned out we could have left
our mast up because there was plenty of room to fit under as the tide
had gone out enough, but better safe than sorry.
end of the 1 mile channel as we were told to do from loopers who had passed the area and from
information we received from our traveling guides via email. It was one of the best days we have had on
the water with quiet winds and calm water the whole trip. What a joy!!!! We turned up the ICW with
Parris Island on our left, then made the approach into Beaufort. What a cute little town. We had lunch
ad a cafe a few minutes from our boat in a beautiful park along the waterfront. Jeannette, Charlie, Jim
and I took a walk along the main street and checked out the shops. Jeannette and I will make the rounds
again tomorrow! Kismet, another looper on their second trip around the loop, came in just after we did.
We haven't seen them since Tarpon Springs back in December, so it was good to see them again.
We were exhausted after getting up so early, and Jim took a nap, and I fell asleep on the couch, woke
up at 7:00. Poor Lily didn't have her supper yet! After her dinner, we took a brief walk along the park
path and back to the boat to relax for the evening and get ready for an exciting day tomorrow.

APRIL 22 DAY 302
Jeannette and I hit the shops this morning along Bay Street to start our day. We all signed up for the
2:00 walking tour of the historical houses in Beaufort which was supposed to be 1 mile, and I thought 1
hour. However, it felt more like 2 miles and it lasted 2 hours! It was interesting, though, and we really
enjoyed the information our guide gave us of all the houses. One house was used by Harriet Tubman as a
hospital. We decided to go out for dinner and choose a restaurant which was about 8 blocks from the
marina. But the 8 blocks were at least a mile, then we had to walk 1/2 mile west. It was well worth it
because Jim and I came back with enough for supper tomorrow night to split between us, as did Charlie
and Jeannette. By the time we got done, it was dark, and the streets we had walked on earlier were
narrow and dark. Our server told us to go up one block to a well lit street, and it was fine, but again, we
had that mile walk back to the boat. We were all exhausted from all the walking today, but we can sure
use the exercise, as looping lends itself to over eating!
Here are some pictures of our walking tour today. I can't remember all the historical details about each
one except for a few that stand out in my memory!

APRIL 23 DAY 303
We left Beaufort at 7:30. It was a beautiful day with no wind and lots of sunshine. The trying part of
today was navigating narrow channels through the salt marshes and a low tide. There was plenty of
water at times, then suddenly dropped to 1 foot or less. We heard boats behind us on the radio as they
were going aground in the shallow spots we had just come through. We got behind 3 very slow sailboats
and were difficult to pass them as they did not move over. We could not read the names on 2 of them
and one had the name completely hidden by the dinghy. They were traveling parallel to each other, and
knew were behind them, but did not respond to our radio call about a slow pass. We eventually came into
Charleston an hour later than planned and missed slack tide which meant we had to battle the current
and wind all against us. We came into the inside basin and had to turn around to tie up on the long
cement "mega dock". Even through the turn around area was large enough, the current was SO BAD,
that we barely could make the turn before being pushed down the channel. Of course, we DID make it,
with Jim working very hard (our wonderful Nordic handled beautifully and came through for us!).
Highlander decided best to dock on the outside, but it is very rough on that side with the waves and
passing boats.
We are docked WAY OUT on this long cement dock. It takes over 10 minutes to get Lily to shore and
even then, there is only one little piece of grass for her. It must be the only doggy place because they
have a doggy walk station with bags for pick-ups. I tried another place, but she picked up many sand
burrs inside her paws and were difficult to remove. I guess we are back to wearing boots here, too.
There is a wildfire burning north of us in Myrtle Beach. We were planning to leave Sunday and hope we
can still make it to the next stop which is Georgetown, but we were have to see. The ICW is closed
form mile marker 347 to 365. The marina we are planning to stay at is in the heavy smoke zone. What
a terrible catastrophe for the poor people who have lost their homes.

Pictures of our trip along the ICW today in the low country of South Carolina. The last picture is one of the ranges we had to use to help stay in the channel. We had to line up the bottom sign with the top one. The front ranges were easy to follow, but when they came behind us, I had to line them up and Jim set the auto pilot.
|
The left picture is when the tide was almost at dead low. You can tell by the range marker how much the water dropped from high tide by looking at the poles in the water. We were lucky to get through as we had spots that dropped to .7 in a few places. YIKES!

APRIL 24 DAY 304
Today we had our Cummins engine serviced. The mechanic spent all afternoon changing the oil filters,
racors, water pump impeller, fan belt, zincs, and oil. I didn't have much energy since I came down with a
cold. I haven't had one in over 18 months and I guess I was due. We took the marina van to Jim and
Nick's Barbecue in downtown Charleston for dinner. I have half my dinner left for tomorrow! We took the
Black Taxi back to the marina...the car looks like an old English taxi. Tomorrow is "tour" day around town.
April 25 Day 305
Today we took the courtesy van from the marina to downtown historic Charleston. We took the horse and
buggy ride tour which took us through the streets with the historic houses and down to the Battery.
Leslie and Flint from "Grace Full" called Jeanette a few days before and we were planning to meet up
with them. It worked out perfectly, as they called just as our tour was done. We met at Condon's Irish
Pub for lunch. It was GREAT to see them since the last time we saw them was at Joe Wheeler back in
October. My cold has gotten worse and I'm feeing pretty miserable, but trying to enjoy what I can!
Picture of our day continue on the next page.
