CHAPTER 1 Westbrook, CT to Oswego, NY Page 1

JUNE 25 - Westbrook to Branford
We left Pilot's Point Marina one day early! Our departure date was for
the 26th, however, strong thunderstorms were predicted for Thursday,
so we decided to get a head start today and stay at Bruce and
Johnson's Marina in Branford. We have 6 free nights at Brewers, so we
can count this as one of those nights.
It was a big rush to leave with such a quick decision. We both had
appointments in the morning, and I had a load of Lily's sheets to wash at
the house. We were able to get it all done and leave with enough time to
get to Branford while the dock office was still open.
The seas were about 2 feet, a little choppy, and wind 12 knots. We
traveled about 8 knots, and it took 2 1/2 hours to travel the 25 miles.
It was a nice ride, and Lily settled in under Jim's feet and actually was
closing her eyes. The boat was rocking her to sleep! We were in our slip
by 1830 hours.
The NOAA weather forecast seems to have changed from this morning.
They are now forecasting a chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon,
winds 5-10, waves 1 ft. or less, instead of the 60% chance of severe
storms and 20 MPH winds, waves 2+. We will check the weather in the
morning. Leaving at 0700 would get us to Port Washington, LI by 1300,
hopefully before any storms may hit. You never know with weather!

JUNE 26 - Branford to Port Washington, NY We left Branford at 0715. The weather prediction was
correct this time. The seas were less than 1 foot and further along, the seas were totally FLAT! We
hit 3 light showers, but no thunderstorms. The Coast Guard Auxiliary patrol boat 73 out of Milford
joined us off Stratford and traveled with us to Bridgeport. It was wonderful to see our friends from
the Coast Guard Auxiliary on our first section of our trip. It was a BEAUTIFUL send off for us.
We arrived at Port Washington, LI at Brewers Capri Marina at 1230. Lily had a good walk, we had
lunch, and both took naps. We relaxed for most of the day, trying to catch our breath from the early
departure. The weather looks good for our trip around NYC and up the Hudson to Haverstraw Marina.

JUNE 27 - Port Washington to Haverstraw We left Port Washington at 0715. It was a beautiful trip
until we came to Hell Gate where the current was wicked. It got worse going south on the East
River...very choppy and swirly, and you could feel the boat wanting to move in every direction. It only
got worse around the Battery. There were water taxis every where, creating wakes in front, behind,
and on both sides of the boat. People pay money at amusement parks for the "ride" we had from the
Battery to just south of the George Washington Bridge. Our AIS system was going off every 5 seconds
because it was picking up every water taxi! Lily was a little anxious and started panting, but glued
herself beneath Jim's feet at the helm station. Before long, the water calmed down, and we had a nice
ride to Haverstraw. It was almost impossible to get any pictures around Manhattan because we were
rocking and rolling too much. We do have pictures posted of NYC on our Summer 2007 link.
My cousins, Laura, Heather, Bruce, Jason, and Michelle, drove down and we had dinner together at the
restaurant at Haverstraw Marina. The food was very good, but a bit on the expensive side. Lily had her
last walk at 9:00, and we are all tired!

JUNE 28 - Haverstraw to Catskill
It's amazing when I was teaching, I got up at 0530, and how we are on vacation, and I'm getting up at
0515!! With forecasts of PM thunderstorms, we are trying to get to our destination before that happens.
We departed Haverstraw at 0715 and met up with the trawler, Highlander, Jeannette and Charlie, who
was also flying the AGLCA burgee. They contacted us, and we both were heading for Catskill. We
noticed storms on our Sirius weather, and we just made it in time to Catskill as it began to rain. We
visited with Highlander for awhile after we docked and shared information. They are also doing the Loop!
We dropped the mast, hung fenders on both sides, and filled the water tank. We hope to leave very
early for Waterford. Jeannette and Charlie stopped over for some cheese and crackers and we had a
chance to get to know them.
I did not take many pictures since all the interesting sights on the Hudson are on our log for Summer
2007. However, I did take a few and will post shortly. We have a new computer and it doesn't download
pictures the same as our other computer, so we are still learning HOW! We will be reaching "new
territory" once we cross L. Ontario.
