August 7 - 8 Catskill to Croton-on-Hudson / Port Washington                                Page 18
We got underway from Catskill Creek at 8:30. It was a glassy
smooth ride all the way to Croton-on-Hudson and Half Moon Bay
Marina. Our friends, Max and Judy on
Impossible Dream who we
met 5 years ago on the Erie Canal keep their boat here, and it
was nice to see them. Our other boating friends, Graham and
Rita, came later on, and we all went out to King Buffet, fantastic
Chinese buffet...crab legs, shrimp, all kinds of soup, and just
about everything you could think of!

No dogs are allowed in front of the condos here, and the boaters
usually carry their dog or put them in a cart to get them past
the condo area. Lily would not stay in the cart, and she's too
heavy to carry, so we have permission to walk her to the grassy
area outside the gate. We walked VERY fast, and she's really
good about not "going" until I say it's ok!

We visited for a while and helped Max plan his boating vacation to
Long Island Sound. We see rain and thunderstorms on our weather
screen, and the weather forecast on TV also says rain in the
morning, so we will have to see what time we will leave for Port
Washington tomorrow.

August 8

Today is Jim's birthday! We were awakened at 5:00 AM to pelting rain on the bow deck. The boat began
to rock, then rock some more, and then more. I finally got up and pulled up the shades to get a focus
point. There was no chop because of the wave wall, but the current and wind surge made it through, and
the boats rolled and swayed. It was not comfortable! It rained until 7:30, then let up for me to take
Lily for a walk. We came back, ate breakfast, and planned to leave as soon as the storm front left LI.
Brooklyn was hit with a tornado, and the storm was reported to have been severe around NYC, so it was
good that we stayed north.

We left Half Moon Bay at 10:00 with a moderate chop on the Hudson. The wind did pick up to gusts of
20 MPH, and we had the current with us, so we moved along, however, as we approached the George
Washington Bridge, the chop began to build to swells. Further down it got worse - about 3 feet, more
when water taxis went by. Jim set the throttle to cruise about 10 MPH, but we were actually cruising
at 13 with the current and our tug smoothly cut through the rollers. Lily was anxious, but she stayed
quietly under Jim's feet, staring out the pilot house door. There was a Coast Guard Cutter in the middle
of the Hudson just before the Battery, and we had to maneuver around that, plus all the other
sightseeing boats. When we rounded the Battery, the water smoothed out some, but a few fast boats
raced passed about 20 feet off our port side, creating hideous wakes - not very responsible boaters! Hell
Gate was smooth, but strong currents.

After we passed under the Throgs Neck Bridge and passed the Light House, we heard on the radio about
someone taking on water, possibly someone in the water. At first the message was broadcast too fast,
and we didn't get the whole message, but later after passing the spot, we saw 2 police boats and a
helicopter circling the area.  Another boat passed right in front of us and swerved to the right, then
left, again creating a monster wake. With all his "rushing", we caught up with his boat in Manhasset Bay,
so why the rush!??

After docking way out by the fuel dock, I took Lily for the 10+ minute walk to the grassy area by the
street. She was happy for the "pit stop".

Our stern thruster worked as we first entered our slip, but then the motor stopped. Jim called Nordic,
and they gave some advice on what to check. It appears that we will have to get home with just the bow
thruster and that we need a new fuse which they will have to send to us. Our marina is very tight and
tricky, but Jim really has gotten the feel for the boat in just about every situation on this trip.

We decided on pizza for supper and called a local pizza place that delivers. Lily is exhausted from no
naps today; I guess we are, too!
